Paris, January, and Sol Brandt is thirty-one and has not worked in fifteen months. She resits the piece of academic work she failed in December and passes it with a question so small she is embarrassed to submit it. In March her assistant does not come back from the six months of leave she was given. In April a house uses her file for a campaign and the result is subtly wrong in a way nobody can name for four days, and when somebody does name it the answer is that the file is aging on a schedule somebody guessed at seven years ago. And in June the business she invented and did not want pays her, properly, for the first time.
