About the book
Paris, September, and a licensing schedule signed when Sol Brandt was twenty-six comes up for its five-year review. She reads every contract she has ever signed before she goes, which takes four days and is the first time in her life she has done it. The house's own paper contains a comparison she did not ask for: what the file would be worth on current terms if she had allowed a fresh scan, and what it is worth as it stands. The difference is three hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars. In October a cutter of sixty-three asks her for four days. In November somebody offers to buy the name of a business she started in a garden for eleven dollars.
