About the book
Iceland, 1015. Fourteen years ago a man was killed digging into a mound at night, and everybody has always known who killed him, and no court could try him: a court sits between sunrise and sunset, and the defendant cannot come out of his howe in daylight. In April the ground changes hands, which makes the killing live again, and the dead man's son brings the suit because his daughter cannot be betrothed while it stands. The quarter court deadlocks. So the Fifth Court does what no court in this country has ever done and adjourns to the hours the defendant has — two nights at Þingvellir, with the whole country awake for it. And it finds against him.
