About the book
New York, 1975. A dining club that began in 1959 with twelve men and no premises is raising a fund, and its prospectus describes, in eleven pages of neutral commercial prose, a method that requires nobody to be liked by anybody. Aurelia Fanshawe is forty-seven, on her last posting, carrying an overdraft eleven years old, and is offered a client agreement in March. She spends the year deciding. She signs in November. And in December, going through her own papers for the last time, she finds a sentence she wrote down herself in Kenya in 1959 and has never re-read, which says exactly what she is, and has said it for sixteen years in her own handwriting.
